London is 160 miles away with frequent trains taking just over two hours. The nearest airports are Manchester, Nottingham and East Midlands. In the city centre, the Supertram ands services serve both universities and the local area.
Over 2.1 million people commute to the city. The workforce is highly skilled and over 33% have been educated to degree level or above. The city has undergone a population increase above that of the national average, projecting to grow to over 600,000 by 2020. Because of its universities, Sheffield has a large population in the 20-24 age group. Many students choose to remain in the city after graduation.
Sheffield is an ethnically diverse city, with minority ethnic groups making up around 19% of its population. The largest of those groups is the Pakistani community, but there are also large communities of those from the Caribbean, India, Bangladesh, Somali, China and the Yemin.
